Ingredients

Group: Ingredients
  • 4-5 lbs pork shoulder (also known as pork butt)
  • 1 can (12 oz) Dr Pepper soda
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (thick, tangy variety recommended)
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp. chili powder
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • hamburger buns, coleslaw, and pickles for serving (optional but recommended)

Equipment

  • Slow cooker
  • Large skillet
  • Cutting board
  • Forks for shredding

Method

  1. Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder and season generously with salt and pepper.
  2. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the pork shoulder on all sides until golden brown.
  3. In a slow cooker, place sliced onions and minced garlic at the bottom. Transfer the seared pork shoulder into the slow cooker and add remaining ingredients.
  4. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours until fork-tender.
  5. Once cooked, remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred it using two forks.
  6. Return shredded pork to the slow cooker and mix with the sauce.
  7. Serve pulled pork on hamburger buns topped with coleslaw and pickles.

Notes

For best flavor, do not skip the searing step and allow for low and slow cooking.
