Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef (or mixture of beef and pork)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup grated onion (preferably sweet yellow onion)
  • ¼ cup milk (whole or 2% works best)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp. ground allspice
  • ½ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter
  • 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth (preferably low-sodium)
  • 1 Tbsp. soy sauce
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Method
 

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion, milk, egg, Worcestershire sauce, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
  2. Lightly wet your hands and roll the mixture into balls about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt a tablespoon of butter, and brown meatballs on all sides for about 5-7 minutes.
  4. In the same skillet, add remaining butter and whisk in flour; gradually whisk in beef broth and bring to a simmer.
  5. Stir in soy sauce and heavy cream, then return the meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for an additional 5-10 minutes.
  6. Garnish with parsley before serving.

Notes

Leftovers taste even better the next day. Serve them over mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
