Ingredients

Group: Ingredients
  • 1 lb. ground turkey Preferably organic for enhanced flavor.
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced Choose vibrant orange-fleshed ones for sweetness.
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped A sweet onion brings aromatic goodness.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic adds depth and a lovely punch.
  • 1 tsp. smoked paprika Adds a warm, smoky flavor.
  • 1 tsp. ground cumin Complements the sweetness of the sweet potatoes.
  • salt and pepper, to taste Freshly ground is best for flavor.
  • 1 cup chicken broth Use low-sodium to control saltiness.
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil For sautéing aromatic ingredients.
  • fresh parsley, chopped For a pop of color and freshness.

Equipment

  • Large sauté pan
  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Wooden spoon
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to ensure even cooking.
  2. In a large sauté pan over medium heat, drizzle in the olive oil. Once it's hot, add the finely chopped onion. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until they are soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground turkey. Break it apart with a wooden spoon as it cooks, seasoning with smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook until the turkey is no longer pink and becomes coated with the spices, filling your kitchen with a mouthwatering scent.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the diced sweet potatoes and pour the chicken broth over them. Stir until the potatoes are well-coated.
  5. Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Layer the turkey mixture at the bottom, then add the sweet potato mixture on top, spreading it evenly. Cover the dish with foil and bake for about 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes until the sweet potatoes are fork-tender and the top is slightly golden.
  6. Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before garnishing with freshly chopped parsley. The contrast in colors is beautiful, and the inviting warmth of the dish is irresistible.

Notes

For best results, be sure to peel the sweet potatoes thoroughly and avoid overcooking the turkey to keep it juicy.
